Significance Of Ganesh Chaturthi

Why Is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated

Mythologically, Ganesh Chaturthi is the birth celebration of Lord Ganesha, and there are two stories associated with it. Lord Ganesha was born on the fourth day of Bhadrapada, under Shukla Paksha (the rising phase of the moon). That’s why we call the festival Ganesh Chaturthi.

According to one story, On urge of deities, Mother Gauri, the mother of Shri Ganesha, created Ganesha with her body scrub. The purpose of creating Ganesha was to kill the demons. That is why we call him “Vighnaharta” also, meaning one who removes obstacles.

There is another story associated with Lord Ganesha’s Birth. According to this story, after creating Lord Ganesha, Mata (Mother Gauri) was about to take a bath. She ordered Ganesha to watch outside so that nobody could enter inside. After some time, when Mata Gauri went to take a bath, her husband Lord Shiva came. He found Ganesha at the entrance. As per his mother’s wish, Ganesha kept on forbidding Lord Shiva from getting inside. Shiva was unaware of Ganesha’s birth. He got angry with Ganesha and cut Ganesha’s head.

When Mata Gauri saw his son lying on the earth, she got disheartened with Lord Shiva. Shiva promised to revive Ganesha, and then he fixed a baby elephant’s head over Ganesha’s body. This way, Lord Shiva gave another life to Ganesha.

Celebration

Ganesh Chaturthi’s celebration starts with cleaning the house and wearing new or clean clothes after taking a bath in the morning. Then, along with other decoration items and Puja/ worship essentials, we buy clay Ganesha idols from the market. We decorate the worship area, and with due respect, we establish Ganesh’s idol over there.

After offering all the Puja/ worship essentials to Lord Ganesha, we offer bhog or prasad to Ganesha and pray him, to remove all the obstacles from our life and shower his blessings on us for life long.

Puja Vidhi

Establish the Ganesha idol on a piece of clean red clothe over the chauki after cleaning the Puja area. Keep a water pot or Kalash in front of Ganesha. Align some mango leaves in the Kalash, and then keep a Shrifal or nariyal (coconut) over the Kalash. Sprinkle some Ganga Jal.

Make swastikas on four sides of the Kalash with kumkum. Now kindle ghee Diya in front of Ganesha.

Offer tilak to Ganesha with kumkum, Haldi (turmeric), and akshat. After tilak, offer flowers, druva (tender green grass), janeoo, and roli. Then offer laung (cloves), cardamom, supari (beetle nut), and five types of dry fruits. We call it panchmeva and offer to Ganesha.

Now offer bhog or prasad to Ganesha. For bhog or prasad, offer Ganesha’s favorite laddoo, Modak, and fruits. Take a diya on a big plate, place it in the center of the plate, and put camphor or Kapoor in the diya. Ignite camphor or Kapoor and chant Ganesha’s arti. After Arti, everyone takes Ganesha arti’s flame.

Now distribute Prasad among the family members and enjoy the festival.
